Newport Beachhouse 2014

The beaches at Newport are some of my faves. The plush, seaweed-free sand reminds me a bit of Cocoa Beach in Florida. And we loved Florida. But Southern California is where my heart and home is. This was the twins' first trip to the beach and Jake would walk himself out to the waves every morning, his blonde ragamuffin hair flopping in the ocean breeze. He was determined to catch a seagull. And the minute we'd step back inside the beach house he'd demand, "I want. to go. to the beach!" It was a memorable vacation with my little family and parents and siblings and some friends. And even though I almost DIED, I still thought it was a great, relaxing fun-filled week.

So, to the "I almost DIED" story: The first night we were there, a lifeguard died. He was smashed against the rock jetty while trying to save a swimmer who had gotten yanked into the wicked intense under-toe/rip-tide/current/whatever/doesn't matter. Flash forward a few days into the trip. I'm swimming with my sisters in the ocean, having a good time, thinking I've placed myself WELL away from the lifeguard's safety flag boundary. And then just like that, a huge wave comes and pulls me out fast. I come up and see myself being pulled far away from my sisters fast. I look to my left and holy crap I'm being pulled towards the rocks. I knew I was in trouble instantly and remembered all too well the lifeguard that had just died a few days earlier. So I yell, "Brittany, HELP! And start swimming hard, but it does no good. I'm going nowhere...except backwards and towards the rocks. And then the lifeguards there. I could have kissed him. But instead he got an involuntary flashing from me. The current was literally pulling my bathing suit top off. I was so relived I didn't have time to be embarrassed. He coached me calmly how to swim back to shore--which really wasn't far. It was the most exhausting and terrifying two minutes of my life. I get back to my family and they say, "Having fun?" They had no idea I had almost DIED. Needless to say, I was done swimming that day.

And so that was my brush with death. And no Anne of Green Gables, it was most definitely not romantic. Sheesh.

And though that experience it still scarily vivid in my memory, I will always love the beach. Every day since Jake demands at least once, "I want. to go. to the beach!"

Garrisons Go Hiking /// Vasquez Rocks

The morning of Jake's birthday we did a short family hike at Vasquez Rocks. I hadn't been there in years. It was hot, dusty, sunny, rocky (obviously) but DARN cool. Nature is amazing. We explored for a while and ate Chex Mix until Jake decided he was DONE. My kids (and I) are so fair skinned and they just turned bright red from the heat. We guzzled a lot of water. And the babies did great, but were wicked sweaty. I look forward to going back when our kids can walk...and walk willingly.

All About /// Benjamin

Our sweet, tiny Benjamin Martin sure did keep us on our toes in the beginning! He is such a joy! Here are my thoughts/facts about Mister Ben the past four months:

As a Newborn:
-Very slow eater. He takes his time.
-He makes the funniest faces. He has no fat on him so his skin just wrinkles like a little old man's. We call him Benjamin Button.
-Always has his hand by his face.
-Big, bright eyes!
-Constantly stuffy and making raspy, snorting sounds.
-Just a tiny little guy that we love to kiss and cuddle.

At 10 weeks:
-Makes lots of smiley faces.
-Still snorts.
-Has a really goopy right eye that we constantly have to wipe, poor thing.
-Very needy. Loves to be held.
-Has a fast metabolism and still eats slowly.
-Losing hair on top :( Looks like a little Franciscan Friar.
-Always grunting, stretching, moving. Grandpa says your spirit is just too big for that little body!
-Super strong neck/head.
-Likes to look this way and that way and just about wiggles out of our arms!
-Slept through the night for the first time--8 hours. Good boy!

Now at 4 Months:
-Super duper smiley! His smiles are big and gummy and just plain adorable.
-A very happy boy. He likes to talk, talk, talk and giggle!
-Nickname: BenJAMMIN
-Starting to finally get some chunk.
-Very tall and lanky still but looks so much fuller and chubby from when he was first born.
-Always needs to cough. Still stuffy but clearing up.
-Eye is all better. And his eyes are so light, bright blue. They are gorgeous. He is our most blue-eyed child.
-Loves the swing and will take a nice, long nap each day in it.
-Wakes up about once a night. And when he does, he is starving. He thinks he's going to die. We cannot get that bottle in his mouth fast enough.
-Getting a little more hair, not much hah.
-Is loving his fingers right now. If his binky isn't in his mouth, his fingers are.
-Still has a strong neck and is so good at doing tummy time.

I love my happy Benjamin! He is perfect in every way.
